Jazz Lamps

The Jazz Lamps first started as a poster competition, organized by North Sea Jazz and Willem de Kooning. The assignment was to design a poster that communicated Jazz but wasn’t cliché. Previous year students handed in a lot of posters with instruments and fish on them.

I started my research by looking into the history of Jazz. I noticed that it had a rich background with a lot of genres in its self. But more importantly, I realized that jazz has its roots in slavery. At first, I wanted to do a poster on the origin of jazz, to bring more awareness. After some consideration, I chose a different starting point because North Sea Jazz is about coming together and having fun listening to jazz music. Another point I noticed was the fact that in the old days jazz was enjoyed a lot livelier. People danced to it and partied also to jazz music. Nowadays not so much. When people think of jazz they think of sitting in a leather chair in dimmed lights or standing in a jazz café sipping drinks and even have some good conversation.

The first poster was for the competition and I tried to capture the Jazz of back in the day. The second poster was to show how it is now.
